Adora couldn’t quite recall how she managed to wander so far away from her brother. She knew it started with an innocent game of hide-and-seek but her actual journey through the woods and to the Clear Lake was a bit blurred. A displeased frown had wormed its way onto her lips, seeming out of place on her normally chipper features. Quickly, her large eyes scanned the area in hopes of catching a glimpse of the white haired man she was sure had managed to follow her through the maze of trees. Her frown just deepened when she seemed to fail to find a single soul in her immediate vicinity.
Suddenly, a hollow feeling gripped her insides. A whimper started to rise in her chest and her eyes started to water. Panic was setting in. She was alone. Adora absolutely hated to be alone. Anxiously, she started to shift her weight from one foot to the other, failing at keeping still even when a situation was serious to her.
“Hello?” She called out, an almost desperate pitch to her voice. Her mind raced and her fingers began to fidget with the hem of her shirt. Leave it to her to get lost in a game of hide-and-seek. It wasn’t the first time and, surely, it wouldn’t be the last. Though, normally she was never lost in such a desolate area. Cities or towns were fine for her – there were people around. Here, she had nothing but the trees and the lake to keep her company and, sadly, that wasn’t good enough.
Slowly, she made her way to the shore of the lake. Peeking into the reflective water, she was saddened to only find her bright pink hair and wide eyes staring back at her. There didn’t seem to be any fish she could try and swim with.
Perhaps she could befriend a tree. Anything to make the suffocating silence and deadly loneliness disappear. Turning around, she wandered over to a growing sapling. She shook her arm until a pouch fell from her long sleeves into the palm of her hand. “Would you like a piece of candy, Mister Tree? I’m sure you would. They’re really good.” She smiled slightly as she pulled out a bright lemon drop and held it to the small trunk of the growing tree.
“Go on,” she said after the tree seemed to refuse to accept it, “It’s good. I promise.” She let the candy go in hops that, somehow, it would phase through the trunk.
Her eyes watched as the candy fell to the ground and she sighed. “You’re no fun, Mister Tree,” she pouted, reaching down to pick up the candy. Quickly, she was facing the lake once again and scurried over to the water’s edge. She bent down and cleaned the candy off in the water before sticking it into her mouth. The tangy sourness made her lips pucker and cheeks hurt but only for a second. Soon a smile was claiming her lips once again, the sweetness lifting her spirits even if just a little.
Falling onto her bum, she started to take her shoes off and set the pouch beside them. rolling up the sleeves to her shirt and began to wade into the water. Her movements disturbed the reflection, morphing it into things she couldn’t recognize. Though, that only seemed to amuse the young girl. A giggle bubbled up and she began to splash in the water; however, she didn’t dare go in deeper than her knee. Adora didn’t know how to swim and Abby-chan always told her that she wasn’t allowed to play in water if he wasn’t around.
Her giggles were gradually growing louder the more the images became warped. In fact, her smile had been so wide that the candy she had been sucking on fell right out of her mouth. With a surprised, “Oops!” her hand shot into the water to snatch the candy back up. She raised it to her face, inspecting it closely to see if it was still edible.
As she studied the candy, a new reflection caught her attention. The wide eyes flickered to it before she whirled around to face the owner with an excited, “Hey!”

why, yes. it'd been a long day indeed. and he was ready to go home and relax.
why? well, jeez, it couldn't be that hard to figure out. a guy like him, bartending to a load of drunkards? or at least, that was all that had seemed to stream in today -- uncoordinated, loud alcoholics. some of his least favorite kinds of people, because anything you said would bounce right off them. and for a guy like emil, who only managed to deal with such people by telling them exactly what he thought, it was infuriating. but hey, that's what he got for working at a bar, he supposed. his own fault for staying employed there.
needless to say, it'd made the day a long one. nearly every customer he'd had to tend to had been a drunk one -- what the hell was up with that? other people were getting sane people to work with! -- and... damn, it was days like these that really made him want to punch something. quite a few times in a row. but he did need to keep a job, and so there wasn't much he could do but shut up and put up with his lot in life. but there would be bitching to do once he got home, of course. lots and lots of bitching.
and that's what he had to look forward to as he trudged through the woods on his way home. the long forest was a nice route to go; there usually wasn't anyone around that he'd have to put up with encountering. privacy and serenity to clear his thoughts as he moved along. today, though, it wasn't dark as it usually would be after his shift ended. it was a bar, after all, and someone had to take the night shift. with his luck, it was usually him. thankfully he didn't have to that particular day [the longer the night wore on, the more unbearable the customers often became] because he would not have been able to put up with it.
so emil succumbed to the calming scenery, embracing the deep isolated feeling of the forest that might daunt others, immune to its negative effects. besides, there was too much to look forward to once he'd arrived at his destination: a cup of coffee, sitting in an armchair, and relaxing in his own empty abode. it was the kind of thing that he always looked forward to. so much so, actually, that he let himself drift into that and almost didn't notice the peculiar sight off to one side of his path.
but he did, and it made him pause. there was a little girl, wading in the clear lake only a few feet from the trail. what was she doing all the way out here, and alone to boot? it was... bizarre, because usually people weren't out here by themselves, and certainly not people a s young-looking as her. was she lost? well, whatever. he grumbled to himself. not my problem. now the trick was to walk by in a way that she might not notice him. he wasn't much in the mood to go on a hunt for some lost girl's mother.
but no, of course there's be no such thing as an easy getaway. as calmly and quietly as he may of tried to walk by, he'd forgotten about how water tends to reflect things [duh], and she must have noticed his fleeting image behind her. she spun around in a whirl that caused the water to ripple in irritation, her wide, bright eyes immediately fixing upon him.
"hey!"
he groaned inwardly. emil could already tell just by the tone of this girl's voice that she wouldn't be someone he could easily stand. far too much energy. but now, he wouldn't be able to just walk away. figured. but what was he supposed to say to her? "aren't you a little young to be out here by yourself?" he asked simply, with that blunt tone of his. he wasn't going to force in emotion for her sake. "go home to your mother, or something." it was all he really felt like saying so he left it at that, trying to ignore the itch in his feet to keep moving as he waited for some kind of reply.
[ only near the end did i realized that i was going no-caps style, which wasn't quite my initial intention. oh well... orz" ]

Her wide eyes gazed at the man that didn’t seem to be too far from her. Occasionally, they’d fall back to the reflection of him in the water confirming that he was a legit entity and not something that she could have manifested in her imagination herself. His reply gave her enough hope that he was, in fact, a real live boy. The smile that had claimed her lips grew like a hungry fungus, consuming more of her childish face and radiated with absolute joy. New life sparked into sunset hued eyes and, immediately, she dashed out of the water as fast as the stupid resistance would let her. She scooped up her shoes and candy pouch as soon as her feet hit the ground and darted over to him, her pink head bobbing all the way.
She seemed to have been deaf to the bluntness of his voice and blind to the fact that he, obviously, did not wish for her company. Or perhaps spending most of her life with a brother such as Aubrey had made her immune to noticing such things. Either way, it didn’t matter. He had caught her attention and the thought of her loneliness drifting away with the company of this perfect stranger filled her with elated peace. Happiness replaced the stress and panic that had once sought refuge in her chest and being and an excited giggle bubbled past her lips.
“I’m not by myself, silly! You’re here with me, aren’t you?” She piped up as she stopped beside him, ignorant to the real meaning of the question and assuming he meant at that literal moment. She rocked back on her heels until she fell to her bum and started to tug her shoes back on despite the dirt that clung to her feet. As soon as she was comfortable with the situation of her shoes, she stood back up. Her head tipped back so she could look up at him with her large and happy eyes. “To my momma? I don’t know where she is…” her voice grew soft and quiet for a moment, almost sorrowful. Though, it didn’t take long for it to jump back up to its naturally joyful tone, “Abby-chan takes care of me!” Another giggle rang into the air as she rocked back and forth on her heels. “Oh~! My name’s Adora, by the way! Who are you?” She gazed imploringly up at him, refusing to miss the chance of gaining another friend. It was her goal to be friends with everyone, after all. He surely was no exception.
Suddenly, the game she had been playing with her older brother found its way to the forefront of her mind, gaining dominance in her thoughts. Her lips pursed, her eyes widened and darted around the area, searching for a glimpse of white. Once again, she was in the game and she was determined to win like she did every other time. Without really meaning to or realizing it, she started to drag the other into her game of hide-and-seek.
She reached up and snatched his hand with her own small one. A daring smile consumed the happy one. “C’mon!” She demanded and started to tug him in a random direction. She had no idea where she was going or taking him, she just knew she needed to keep moving or she’d be found. “We’ve got to hide,” was the only explanation she gave him for her actions, “There’s a monster after me! We have to hide!”
